Have you visited your local farmer’s market or city market yet this summer? It makes for an enjoyable Saturday morning, and you’re sure to find a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, honey, and even baked goods. My husband and I enjoy visiting the City Market, here in Kansas City, on the weekends. But we’ve learned that everything we see there isn’t necessarily a "good deal."

The trick to getting a good deal at your local farmer’s market is to know what you’d pay at your local grocery store for the same items you’re likely to find at the market. Cherries that sell for $4.50 a pound at the farmer’s market, for example, might go for $4.00 a pound at your favorite grocery store. So, before you decide to make a trip to the farmer’s market, go to the grocery store (or at least get one of the store’s weekly sales flyers in the newspaper) and write down the prices for the fruits and vegetables you want to buy at the farmer’s market. That way, once you get to the farmer’s market, you’ll know if those cherry tomatoes really are a "good deal" at $2.00 a box.
