Healthy Snack Foods

SUNDAY'S FOOD TIP

341432_walnutNext time you go to the grocery store, stock up on some healthy snacks and forget the soda pop, sugary cereals, salty chips, and foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients.

Here are some super snacks that taste good and are good for you, too.

Sweet potatoes - either baked whole, then eaten plain, or you can make sweet potato chips and bake them in the oven with a little vegetable oil

Trail mix - buy the ones with nuts, seeds, dried fruits instead of candies or chocolate chips

100% fruit juices - Instead of fruit drinks that are mostly food coloring, artifical flavorings, and additional sugar

Fresh fruit - try sliced bananas with some cantaloupe chunks; enjoy a ripe mango all by itself, or savor a ripe, firm Rome apple at snack time with a little Cheddar cheese

Celery strips - fill them with organic peanut butter for a satisfying snack

Carrot strips, fresh broccoli and cauliflower flowerets - enjoy these with a vegetable dip made with plain yogurt

As you shop for snack food, ask yourself "Does this food have much nutritional value, or is just packed with empty calories?" then choose the foods that will nourish your body as well as satisfy your craving for snacks.

"There's someone at every party who eats all the celery." - Kin Hubbard
